The answer isn’t based on guesswork or simply looking at the weather forecast. Every morning, our team evaluates multiple factors before making the decision to operate. For us, safety isn’t just a checklist—it’s a mindset.

Rivers Change Every Day

Unlike a swimming pool or a lake, a river is a living system. Rainfall upstream, fallen trees, debris, water releases, and changing river levels can all affect the conditions from one day to the next. Even if the weather is sunny at our base, heavy rain many miles upstream can dramatically change the river. That’s why every day starts with a fresh assessment.

Step 1: Evaluating River Conditions

Our first priority is understanding the river itself. We evaluate: * Current water levels * Flow speed * Water clarity * Recent rainfall throughout the watershed * Any unusual changes from previous days River level alone never tells the whole story. Two days with the same water level can paddle very differently depending on how quickly the river is rising or falling. Experience plays a critical role in interpreting these conditions.

Step 2: Monitoring Weather Patterns

Weather matters—but not always in the way people expect. Instead of only looking at today’s forecast, we also consider: * Rainfall overnight * Storm activity upstream * Forecasted precipitation during the trip * Seasonal weather trends Costa Rica’s tropical climate means that rain is a normal part of the ecosystem, and many excellent rafting days happen during light or moderate rain. However, significant rainfall in the river’s watershed can quickly change river conditions.

Step 3: Inspecting the River for Hazards
